What if a Child Is Hurt While in My Care?
Accidents can happen, even with attentive care. If a child is injured during your TLC shift, it’s important to stay calm and follow the proper steps to ensure the child’s safety and proper documentation.
Step 1: Assess the Situation
First, determine the severity of the injury.
- Stay calm and reassure the child
- Check for signs of serious injury or distress
- Administer appropriate first aid if needed
- Do not move the child if you suspect a serious injury unless necessary for safety
If the injury is life-threatening or requires immediate medical attention, call 911 right away.
Step 2: Notify the Parent or Guardian
Parents should always be informed as soon as possible when a child is injured.
- Explain what happened clearly and calmly
- Share any first aid or care that was provided
- Let them know if additional medical attention may be needed
Even minor injuries should be communicated to the family.
Step 3: Complete the Dependent Accident Report
Once the immediate situation is stable, all child injuries that occur during a TLC shift should be documented as soon as possible.
Please complete the TLC Dependent Accident Report Form here:
TLC Dependent Accident Report Form
The form will ask you to provide:
- What happened
- When and where the injury occurred
- The care that was provided
- Whether medical attention was needed
- Any instructions given by the family
Once submitted, a TLC team member will review the report and follow up if additional information is needed. Clear communication and timely documentation help us maintain a safe environment for children, families, and caregivers.
We will reach out with any additional next steps that may need to be taken.
