Can I Give Medication to Children During a TLC Shift?
Medication administration is only allowed when there is clear parent authorization and proper documentation in place. Caregivers should never give medication unless they have confirmed instructions and approval through TLC guidelines.
Step 1: Confirm Required Medication Waiver Is Completed
Before giving any medication—whether over-the-counter or prescription—a TLC Medication Waiver must be completed.
Please use the official form here:
If the waiver has not been completed, or you are unsure, do not administer any medication. Contact the parent or TLC for clarification before proceeding.
Step 2: Make Sure You Understand the Instructions
Caregivers should only administer medications they feel confident and trained to give. Make sure you fully understand the instructions before the medication is due.
- Verify the parent has clearly instructed you to administer the medication
- Confirm the correct child, dosage, and timing
- Ensure instructions are written or clearly documented whenever possible
- Ask questions immediately if anything is unclear
If anything feels uncertain, pause and clarify before giving medication.
Step 3: Follow Safe Medication Practices
Once medication has been approved:
- Follow the exact dosage and timing provided by the parent
- Only administer medication to the correct child
- Double-check labels and instructions every time
- Never guess, estimate, or adjust dosage
Accuracy and consistency are essential.
Step 4: Document and Communicate
After medication is given:
- Record what was administered (documentation is always recommended, even if not required for the shift)
- Inform the parent that the medication was given
- Note any unusual reactions or concerns immediately
- Contact TLC if anything unexpected occurs
Step 5: When in Doubt, Pause and Ask
If you are ever unsure about:
- Whether medication should be given
- The correct dosage or timing
- Whether authorization is valid
Do not administer the medication. Contact the parent or TLC office first.
Safety and accuracy are always the top priority when it comes to medication.
