Can Children Swim While in My Care?

Water safety is extremely important. Caregivers should never assume swimming is allowed during a TLC shift without direct approval and proper documentation.

Step 1: Confirm it is a Private Client Shift and a Lifeguard will be on Duty

Supervising children or adults is never permitted while working with a corporate client. It is only allowed working with a private client if the there is a lifeguard present.

  • Confirm there will be a lifeguard on duty for the entire time you will be swimming.
  • Make sure that the shift does not come from one of our Corporate Back-up Care Partners like Bright Horizons or LifeCare.

If you are unsure whether swimming is permitted, contact the TLC office before allowing the activity.

Step 2: Verify a Swim Waiver Is on File

Swimming during TLC private shifts requires an approved swim waiver filled out by the client.

  • Swim activities should not occur unless the proper waiver has been completed
  • Caregivers should contact the TLC office directly if they need to verify or request swim waiver information

Step 3: Review Water Safety Expectations

Before entering the water:

  • Understand the family’s pool or water safety rules
  • Identify emergency equipment and exits if applicable
  • Confirm which children can swim independently and which require hands-on supervision
  • Make sure children are using any required flotation devices

Never rely solely on flotation devices or pool staff for supervision.

Step 4: Maintain Active Supervision at All Times

Children or other dependents should never be left unattended near water — even briefly.

  • Remain fully attentive and avoid distractions like phones
  • Keep children within sight at all times
  • Stay close enough to respond immediately if needed
  • Use extra caution with younger children and inexperienced swimmers

Even strong swimmers require continuous supervision.

Step 5: Contact TLC if Questions or Concerns Arise

If you are ever unsure about swimming permissions, safety expectations, or waiver requirements, contact the TLC office before proceeding with the activity.
