Protecting Your Mental Health as a Nanny
Nannying is meaningful, relationship-driven work, and it can also be emotionally demanding in ways that are easy to overlook. Caring well for children starts with caring well for yourself. Here are a few practical ways to protect your mental health in this role.
Recognize the Signs of Burnout
Burnout does not always look dramatic. It can show up as exhaustion that a weekend off does not fix, irritability, dreading a workday you usually enjoy, or feeling emotionally checked out. Catching these signs early makes them much easier to address.
Set Clear Boundaries, Early
Boundaries around hours, responsibilities, and communication outside of work protect both you and the family you work for. A clear, respectful conversation early in a placement, or anytime something starts to feel off, prevents small frustrations from building into bigger ones.
Build In Real Time to Decompress
Caring for children all day is genuinely tiring work, even when it is rewarding. Protect time after work, even just twenty minutes, to transition out of caregiving mode before starting your own evening. This small buffer matters more than it seems. Practice deep breathing, take a yoga class. Sit in your car for 10 minutes and listen to music or audiobooks. Put the phone away and stop scrolling.
Stay Connected to Other Caregivers
Nannying can be an isolating job, since you are often the only adult in the room for much of the day. Staying connected with other nannies, whether through a local group, an online community, or a placement agency’s network, provides support and reminds you that your experience is shared. Not one in your area? Consider starting one, as many nannies probably feel the same way you do.
Ask for Support When You Need It
If work stress starts to affect your wellbeing consistently, do not wait it out alone. Talk to your placement agency, a trusted friend, or a mental health professional. Asking for support is a sign of strength, not a shortcoming.
